| REQUEST FOR SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING AMBASSADORS
The Science and Engineering Ambassadors (SEA's) programme is co-ordinated nationally by SETNET, the National Network for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The aim of the SEA's programme is to support teachers in the delivery of the curriculum and to inspire and enthuse young people about STEM subjects and the career opportunities they offer.
All Ambassadors involved in the programme are volunteers employed across a broad spectrum of STEM disciplines and careers - at all levels. Ambassadors undergo a brief induction, which provides helpful hints on communicating with young people and working with schools, and are given a Criminal Records Bureau check, which is necessary for working with young people.
Once they are fully registered, Ambassadors can take part in lots of different exciting, hands-on activities, from building robots to helping with engineering clubs, all organised by the local SETPOINT - organisations skilled in facilitating education and business links. You'll be part of a national programme and will get the chance to meet with other like-minded Ambassadors in your area, and it's a great way further to develop your own communication and presentation skills.
Some SEA's are able to work once or twice a month with a local school, others support the occasional event such as an Engineering Challenge Day or a Regional Young Engineers' Final, acting as advisers or judges.
If you are interested in becoming an Ambassador, or know of someone who would like to get involved in the scheme, please visit http://www.setnet.org.uk where you can download a registration form

Amateur Radio Communications Foundation Course
Volunteers from the Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society will be running another evening Amateur Radio Foundation course starting Thursday 25th May.
The course, held at Danbury Village Hall, is six weeks of practical and theory, but the view from previous course attendees, is that it's not just boring theory but a whole load of fun as well. Learning about radio communications then complimenting what you have been taught by using the radio works well for most people and it's easier to take all the information in.
Radio Amateurs communicate all over the world. All of the astronauts currently onboard the International Space Station are licenced Radio Amateurs and during their spare time they talk to other Radio Amateurs back on earth. There is a special thrill in talking to an astronaut out in space!
To do all this it is necessary to obtain an amateur transmitting licence. These licences are only issued to those who can prove that they are able to install, maintain and operate their equipment properly and therefore don’t cause a nuisance to other radio users world wide. Fortunately it is not difficult to obtain a licence, and gaining the licence gives a real feeling of achievement, apart from the fact that you will know more about radio and its technology.

About Us
IET Essex has over 2400 members. We
put on a number of lectures which are designed to appeal to
a wide range of interests - not only lectures covering specialist
areas of engineering but also those of more general interest.
Most of our events are held in the Telford
Lecture Theatre, BAE Systems, Advanced Technology Centres,
at Great Baddow near Chelmsford (formerly Telford Lecture
Theatre at the GEC-Marconi Research Centre). We also frequently
use Ford Motor Company's head office at Warley near Brentwood.
We maintain close links with Anglia Polytechnic
University and with local schools and youth groups.
IET Essex Younger Members Section (YMS)
The YMS arrange a programme of events
that is complementary to the Essex , targeted at the area's
young professionals. As well as lectures, we organise social
events, industrial visits and events to encourage young people
into engineering.
Both the and the Younger Members
Section actively encourage new members, and it is easy to
become involved both in a participatory and an organisational
role, by joining our committee.
