Multichannel Audio and Diffuse Loudspeakers in the Home Theatre
Speaker:
By Professor Malcolm Hawksford, University of Essex
Venue:
University of Essex
Synopsis:
High-quality audio systems now embrace multi-channel sound as a means of creating a more exciting and accurate soundscape. The audio industry has spawned a plethora of technology to support this revolution. A multitude of coding and decoding formats are used ranging from esoteric DVD-audio and SACD through to Dolby digital and DTS, which have crossed over from the cinema environment to domestic home theatres and are supported on DVD-video.
This lecture will discuss aspects of this broad field of engineering. It will also introduce recent developments in distributed-mode loudspeaker (DML) technology that are impacting on the way multi-channel systems can be integrated into the home environment. A demonstration will be staged to support this approach and to show the potential of using diffuse sources for multi-channel audio reproduction in difficult acoustic surroundings. The cost and construction of this array of loudspeakers should prove memorable...

Speaker:
Dr. Richard Bartle, University of Essex
Venue:
Lecture Theatre Block (room to be announced) at the University of Essex

There are several ways to use mobile phones for games. Each comes with its own constraints on the kind of games that can be written (and, important from a business point of view, on the means by which money can be generated). Single-player and multi-player games have additional strengths and weaknesses of their own, which are also important. The talk starts from the beginnings of handset-specific games and progresses to WAP (a failure), SMS (a success) and the new technologies of J2ME and BREW. The possibilities offered by MMS and global positioning data for games are also explored.

Half Day Seminar for Consultants: Setting Up your Own Business
Venue:
Venue to be advised
Synopsis:
IEE Essex is planning a seminar for people who want to set up as a self employed consultant or contractor as well as for people who have set up and want further advice.
The seminar is planned for Saturday morning 18th January 2003 from 10.00 to 13.00 at the APU Riverside Campus in Chelmsford. We will have experienced people from the Consultants PN on hand who have run similar events before. They will act as facilitators to help people help themselves as well as offering their own advice.
Clearly we need a sensible quorum to allow this to work. Can you please register your interest in this event by e-mailing Roger Smith at rogerlsmith@iee.org by 8th December so that we can plan ahead. If no more than 10 people register we will not be able run the event. We had planned to make a small fee for this event, but as we have been allowed the accommodation by courtesy of the APU we will waive that charge.
The professional competence of people working on safety related systems is important to all of us, especially as electrical engineers. Ray Ward will discuss the IEE guidelines on this subject, the background to them, current work and the way forward. Can you afford to miss this important review?
"Range Rover Development: the Evolution of a Legend"
Speaker:
Peter Crowley-Palmer (Rover Principal Designer)
Venue:
Telford Lecture Theatre, BAE SYSTEMS Advanced Technology Centre, West Hanningfield Road, Great Baddow, Chelmsford, Essex

This is an informal talk supported by rarely seen images of the design process used to develop the all new Range Rover. You will be able to see the designer's work unfold, building on the strengths of Land Rover's history and using iconic cues. The design moves from simple 2D sketches to full size models of production intent vehicles. The presentation will follow the process from conception to the press launch of the final product. For the more enthusiastic of the audience it may be possible to spend a little extra time viewing video footage of the Off Road Test and Development of vehicles at the Gaydon Test Facility.
Since the advent of Channel 4's 'Time Team' programme, a wider public is now aware of the existence of non-invasive techniques to investigate archaeological sites. These include resistivity, magnetometry and ground penetrating radar. The first part of the talk covers the techniques and includes a demonstration of magnetometry.
The second part discusses the visual representation of the results. The talk will be illustrated with new results from the Colchester area and Norfolk.
