An exploration of thermionic audio from the fifties to the present-day. This lecture will look at modern technological advancements in the thermionic audio field. There will also be a demonstration, comparing thermionic against transistor audio, so come and hear the difference!

The developed world generally and Europe especially benefit from rich digital connectivity and a road map to deliver further improvements in bandwidth and accessibility. Lagging behind this are applications and appliances to connect to this network that effortlessly and instinctively meet human needs. The speakers will give a presentation on Car Electrics expressed in general terms but with a wide coverage, including high end features and recent developments. The talk will be illustrated with a film sequence as well as some sample components for close inspection.
The speaker will outline the workings of the various printing methods and then explain how electronic advances have made them (basically still the same) easier and quicker
Channel Tunnel Rail Link – Creating the High Speed Connection

Synopsis:
The presentation will briefly cover the objectives, organisation and concept of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link project, before looking at the engineering and operation of Section 1 in Kent, now complete and operational, and at Section 2 into London St Pancras, currently under construction.
The Butler Chip, developed at MBDA, recently received a Queen's Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category. It is used to replace software executive functions in real-time multi-processor systems, releasing resources for the primary role of the system. The two originators of this invention will talk about the background to the Butler project, and the architectural concepts and design techniques used.

The Victorians revolutionised communications when they overcame enormous engineering problems to encircle the globe with a worldwide network of submarine telegraph cables. Their system formed the basis for today’s international communications, including the modern Internet.
The Speaker will show that with a little imagination we can all create recognisable shapes out of what appears to be random spacing of the surrounding stars. We can then take a brief journey through our Solar System with an array of colourful slides.

Auto Video Inspection (AVI) is an advanced technology that acquires high definition dynamic video images alongside other measurement data of assets for both investigative and routine condition monitoring. AVI is routinely used alongside noise and vibration, ride quality, geometry and component loading and displacement measurements to deliver a complete Asset Condition Monitoring (ACM) service. This system is now established as a key maintenance strategy tool for the rail industry. Joe Nolan, the AVI team leader for Metronet BCV, will provide an interesting insight into the technology used and its outputs.

Advanced Surgical Instruments into the New Millenium

--- ASIT is a charity run in Southend to develop new aids and instruments for surgery. Many new techniques have been developed there such as a laparascopic surgical scanner, and the UK’s first cell saver machines. Hear about these and others from the charity’s chairman. You will be proud to hear about this Essex based winner.
10 years ago Virtual Reality was a new technology which seemed destined to dominate the way we would all work, learn and play. With this lecture Bob Stone, Professor of Interactive Multi-media Studies at the University of Birmingham will bring the subject up to date in the light of experience and evidence gained over the past decade. This lecture is co-sponsored by the e-infrastructure,VIE and MMC PNs.

ADS-B is a surveillance concept where a vehicle (airborne or ground) broadcasts its position at regular time intervals for receipt by some application. ADS-B is an enabling technology for many new applications being developed to improve airborne safety and capacity.
Find out about the secret code breaking procedures undertaken at the famous code breaking Bletchley Park during World War II. This lecture to be preceded by the 2005 AGM of IEE Essex.
On 22 June 2005 IEE Essex is organising another of its interesting/informative and most of all enjoyable summer outings.
This year we will visit Duxford Imperial War Museum where we shall have a conducted tour of the major items and then we go to Wimpole Hall, a National Trust house in Cambridgeshire which has a fine house, interesting gardens and a farm area.
It is a quiet relaxing day in the company of like minded people - so why not take a day off?
