Moore’s Law, Metcalfe’s Law and Murphy’s Law: Success and Failure with New Technology
Speaker:
Simon Maddison
Venue:
Telford Lecture Theatre, BAE SYSTEMS, Great Baddow, CM2 8HN
Synopsis:
Hitting the magic point on the ‘hockey-stick’ curve is the dream of every hi-tech entrepreneur. But why does this happen, and what are the factors that result in explosive success? In this lecture, Simon Maddison draws on over 30 years of experience at the bleeding edge of the telecommunications industry to discuss Gordon Moore, Bob Metcalfe and Murphy’s laws. He extracts some specific insights and analyses what their impact has been on now-pervasive high-technology products and services, such as Facsimile, the Mobile Phone, the Internet and e-Bay. History is littered with successes and failures!
Brian Bowers (Writer and Consultant on Engineering History)
Venue:
Telford Lecture Theatre, BAE SYSTEMS, Great Baddow, CM2 8HN
Synopsis:
Ambrose Fleming (1849-1945) is remembered primarily for his invention in 1904 of the thermionic valve, the invention that made radio practical, but that was only one of the contributions Fleming made to electrical engineering and to modern life. The valve arose from Fleming’s work as scientific adviser to the Marconi Company. He was also closely involved with the early electric lighting industry, working with Edison and John Hopkinson at Holborn Viaduct, and from 1885 to 1926 he was professor of electrical engineering at University College London. This lecture will describes the life and work of Fleming and the contribution he made to the scientific field over almost 100 years
Telford Lecture Theatre, BAE SYSTEMS, Great Baddow, CM2 8HN
Synopsis:
The construction of Heathrow Terminal 5 began in September 2002. It is on time for its opening in March 2008 and on budget at £4.3bn. Terminal 5 will accommodate an additional 30 million passengers annually on a 260ha site equivalent in size to London’s Hyde Park. Terminal 5 is not just about buildings. The rail and tunnel infrastructure includes 13.5km of bored tunnels, a six platform rail station serving extensions to Heathrow Express and London Underground Piccadilly Line Station in the basement of the main terminal. It is BAA’s vision that 50 per cent of all surface access journeys to Terminal 5 will be made on public transport. In this presentation Andy Watkinson, a senior engineer in the Rail and Tunnels team, will provide an insight into the Terminal 5 Project. The presentation will show you some of the amazing engineering challenges overcome in one of Europe’s largest projects. As part of the presentation he will introduce you to some of the specialist areas that he has led including the SIL2 developed Tunnel Ventilation Control System and the integration of the rail station systems into the existing Control Room at Heathrow Express.

Running at 300km/hour in three countries, the design of the trains had to overcome some unique technical challenges. The presenter will describe the key technical requirements and features of the Eurostar trains and how these challenges were met.

Speaker:
Sri Kadirkamanathan, Ranjan Thilagarajah, Tom Browne (Consultant Surgeons)
Venue:
Telford Lecture Theatre, BAE SYSTEMS, Great Baddow, CM2 8HN
Synopsis:
Three short medical presentations showing how technology is benefiting the healthcare sector.
High Frequency Ultrasound Therapy Treatment for Prostate Cancer ******************** Prostate cancer is the commonest cancer in men in the UK, with over 30,000 new cases being diagnosed each year. The lifetime risk for being diagnosed with prostate cancer is 1 in 14.
There are many curative therapies and treatments available to treat this cancer and HIFU (high intensity frequency ultrasound) is now one option that has demonstrated good results with minimal impact on the patient's day-to-day activities.
This lecture gives an overview of the technology and aims to show how it has changed the treatment of this common disease in the urologist's practice.
Future of Simulation, a Holistic Engineering Approach
Speaker:
Prof. Hassan Shirvani (Anglia Ruskin University)
Venue:
Telford Lecture Theatre, BAE SYSTEMS, Great Baddow, CM2 8HN
Synopsis:
Since its introduction in the industrial engineering community in the 1970s, discrete-event simulation has become the most frequently used technology in the design and analysis of complex systems. Simulation tools are becoming progressively more sophisticated. This talk explores the future of Simulation-Based Engineering Science, particularly the challenges faced by software engineers as they cope with increasingly complex algorithms and the need to understand their application.
