On Thursday 30th March 2000, the Essex Younger Members
Section organised a technology evening for the 6th Chelmsford Scouts.
This was in an attempt to spread the word about the opportunities of work
in science and engineering and to gain ourseleves a few challenge points!
The evening started with a short talk from Steve Wade, who then introduced
a short video. The Scouts were then split into teams and given their first
challenge, building a tower from straws, cocktail sticks and fruit pastels.
This challenge was taken from the Honourary officers conference. Amazingly
it took a while for most people to realise that the fruit pastels could
be used as glue if they were made moist!
the results varied enourmously, but there was definately some potentail
civil engineers amongst the participants

The second challenge was to build a bridge to support an egg bearing load
from spaghetti
and plastercine. This proved to be a rather delicate task, but there
were seome excellent results. One team became slightly upset when they
were told that they had to move their bridge to the test area, bu then
customer requirements are always dynamic!

Overall the evening proved very successful
and all the Scouts enjoyed themselves.
